This tournament is a celebration of John and the sport that he loved. Established in 2016, it is a full-day, competitive 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament for both youth (U17, U15, U13, U11/12 & High School Girls) and adult divisions. Held at the Richmond Olympic Oval this year, there will be four full courts in use, plus a BBQ and Beer Garden outside on the Riverside Plaza. The day will be a great opportunity to connect with friends and members of the wider basketball community representing the past 30 years of basketball in BC.
Our partner, Drive Basketball will be hosting the youth divisions. With over 40 teams we look forward to a competitive and fun tournament. All teams will play at least 3 games in round robin format, before proceeding to playoffs.
This division is open to players 18 and up. With space for 10 teams, many of John’s former teammates from all levels will be participating supporting John while reconnecting with old team mates and friends. Although there will be much banter, competitive juices will be flowing and so look forward to an entertaining and competitive tournament.
This year, the proceeds will be going to 2019 Vancouver college grad, Robert Mendez as his mom just recently passed away from breast cancer in May. Robert Mendez was a 1 year basketball, and 5 year football player for the fighting Irish. He exemplified what it meant to be student athlete, while watching his mother fight the rigorous battle of cancer.
We really wanted to put together an event that celebrates the ideals and values John stands for. When you are apart of a team sharing common interests and goals you become more than just teammates. You become life long friends. We really want to drive home that message to the younger generation as this is one of the greatest gifts sport offers. Join us on August 26th in our celebration of this ideal and enjoy the connections and reconnections of former teammates and coaches. If you’re beginning your journey in sport, come out with your parents and experience these connections and bonds of former team mates.
Register as a single player and we will place you on a team or register an entire team
We look forward to seeing you all there on Saturday August 31st.
John passed away September 1, 2016 after a one year battle with a rare and aggressive nasal cancer, called Sinonasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma. He was 41 years old.
Basketball was a central part of John’s life. He attended Vancouver College for twelve years, and like his own father and now his sons, he was a proud member of the Fighting Irish. Both John and his wife Trixie played Varsity Basketball for the UBC Thunderbirds and then moved to the Philippines for John to play professionally for several years before they returned to Vancouver to raise their family.
The sport brought immense joy to John, as a player and later as a coach. The friends he made along the way, in both teammates and coaches, were lifelong friends. Watching his three sons play basketball was one of John’s greatest joys.
This tournament is to honour John, and the sport he loved.

Yes! We will have a BBQ going from 11am-6pm plus beer and non-alcoholic beverages. We’ll be accepting cash and credit cards. There is also a concession on the lower level of the Oval with a wide assortment of options. We recommend all players bring water bottles and refill them at the Oval’s water stations.
No, there will not be a mandatory entrance fee but we will be taking donations at the door if you wish to contribute as the tournament is a fundraiser event.
Each team must have at least 3 players but can have as many players as you’d like. We recommend no more than 5 as the games are short and playing time would be very limited for teams with more players.
Yes. You can park in the Richmond Olympic Oval parking lot. If they are full there is ample street parking in the area. We recommend you park in the city works parking lot – it’s free all day (download street parking map).
